The Measurement Of Team Success - 1408 Words

So what is the measurement of team success in professional sports? Is it number of wins? Is it the number of division titles or championships? Or is it the number of sellouts or amount of team revenue? Whatever it may be, the types of players you have on your team is important to reach any level of success. So how much money should a team spend on their players? Salaries of professional sports players are way higher that the average person. Lately, salaries of players in the National Basketball Association are increasing year after year. Even with a salary cap, teams can now spend more money on highly gifted athletes in hopes to bring division titles and championships to their respective organizations. So does spending more money on player salaries guarantee a winning team? Now you could go into free agency, and sign some of the biggest stars in all of basketball and think to yourself that you will be poised for a shot at a championship that year. However, just because you pay a top -tier player, it doesn’t guarantee that they will stay healthy. There are many outlying factors to a player’s performance. From the research I have found, the results are mixed regarding the relationship between team salary and performance. If an NBA team spends more money on player salaries, this does not guarantee a better team performance. Designing and Managing Industrial Product Service

Question: Discuss about the Designing and Managing Industrial Product Service . Answer: Introduction: Founded in the year of 1997 on August 29, one of the most popular and recognized multinational organizations entertainment organizations of America, Netflix emerged to be retail giant in the entertainment industry of the global market (Bruce 2014). Although the organization had a very humble beginning, with a handful number of workers, the streaming business largely expanded with the expansion of the market. By the year of 2013, the organization added film as well as television production that helped the organization benefit from the subscription of 93 million people worldwide (Jenner 2016). However, it should be noted that despite being an average start-up, Netflix managed to reach the pinnacle and one of the key drivers behind the growth of the organization is its effective strategies. Accordingly, the following task intends to analyze and evaluate the strategies undertaken by Netflix that has ultimately helped the company witness a massive jump in its stock price in the market. A Brief History of Netflix: Netflix was founded by Marc Randolp and Reed Hastings in California in the year of 1997 (Bruce 2014). Although the organization initially was meant to offer products or service via internet, keeping in mind the love of the Americans for TV content and movies, the plan was revised, and the organization started offering TV content to the audience in lieu of subscription fees. In the year of 1998, Netflix was a very ordinary organization which had merely 30 employees working under it, and the organization had at most 925 works available (Vickers et al. 2016). However, while during its inception, the market of the organization primarily consisted of the business of sending DVD by mail, by the year of 2007, the organization expanded its market further by introducing the business of streamline video. Further, by the year of 2013, Netflix managed to mark its international presence worldwide, providing a far more diverse service to the consumers including film, television production and onli ne production (McCord 2014). Each organization has been disrupting old, traditional ideas of conducting business, and evolving its service in a considerable way, that is ultimately helping the organization enjoy a growth in revenue. Netflix is also no exception here. The organization has rightly observed the irrelevance of the physical DVDs in the contemporary market, and hence the organization rightly applied the most advanced technology for replacing the physical DVDs by the streaming videos (Uribe and Hunt 2016). It is only the Netflix organization that has helped the consumers of television series and movies gain a convenience experience instead of the immersive experience. While the introduction of the online video service in 2007 has helped the company gain from technological disruption, the organization has managed to enjoy its competitive edge, by asking its video algorithm team to develop a number of quality levels or recipes meant for improving the consumer experience. The organization has not only succeeded in offering excellent quality picture and audio to the consumers, but also offers convenient experience to the consumers, who can stream their videos of Netflix directly to the television sets, via Chromecast for their own comforts (Madrigal 2014). Netflix offers the opportunity to its consumers to watch TV shows as well as movies, otherwise unavailable on a free social media platform. The target market of the organization primarily consists of viewers waiting to explore the innovative content of new television series and movies (Gustin 2014). The business of online streaming has helped Netflix offer the newest television shows and the most recently released movies in lieu of a set monthly fee. Initially, though the organization initially got the license of streaming newly released movies by forming partnership with the concerned studios, it realized soon that it could not convince the high class studios to lend their most popular television content to Netflix. Hence, the organization introduced a more innovative plan of producing its own movies and television series, so that it can attract consumer attention by its exclusively available production (Adhikari et al. 2015). Pricing Strategies: As far as the pricing strategy of the organization is concerned, it should be noted that Netflix operates in a highly competitive market and hence the pricing strategy chosen by the organization is largely determined by the nature of competition, the organization encounters. Since, recently Netflix has been encountering tough competition from organizations such as Sling TV and Hulu. Now, while price against which the online television service offered by Hulu is $35 per month, the subscription fee of Sling TV is priced at $ 15 per month (Helo et al. 2017). Keeping into consideration the moderate to premium pricing strategy of its arch rivals, the price strategy of Netflix is being deliberately kept low at $ 10 per month (Helo et al. 2017). In a conference, the management authority of Netflix has admitted that it has deliberately kept its service underpriced so as to ensure that the consumers have been anchored on Netflix and the company can enjoy competitive edge over others. As the d iagram below explains and illustrates, the service offered by Netflix is comparatively much cheaper in respect of the other rival giants of the market: Besides, the organization tries to ensure uniformity in the price rate among all the 60 countries it is currently operating in (Lyons 2016). It is worthwhile to mention here that back in the year of 2011, the consumers of Netflix witnessed a 60% hike in the subscription fees to be paid, and consequently the organization itself witnessed a shocking 75% drop in the total stock prices (Wu 2015). Soon the organization realized that the hike in the price proved to be nothing short of a financial loss for Netflix with a loss of 800,000 subscribers (Choudhary and Zhang 2015). Hence, the organization modified its existent pricing strategy and adopted the lower price point strategy. Besides, it should also be noted that the organization, in order to retain its top position has recently started offering a variety of new pricing options for the new consumers, and accordingly the consumers can choose their service in lieu of subscription fees ranging from $ 7.99 to $ 11.9 each month. The organiz ation offers new schemes of pricing plans- Basic Plan, Standard Plan and Premium Plan (Wu 2015). Netflixs Innovations: Despite having established in the year of 1997, Netflix has managed to soar pretty fast in terms of its profitability. More importantly, with a market value of approximately $11 billion, the organization is indeed illustrating a design principle that most of the organizations aspiring to achieve innovative disruption wish to adopt. Hastings, one of the founders of Netflix, during the early days of Netflix was well-aware that mailing DVDs would never let the organization earn substantial amount of revenue in the future. Hence, overlooking the immediate profit of the organization, he deemed it profitable to invest $10 million for researching into the area of streaming videos (Nan et al. 2016). It should be observed that Netflix as an organization not only adopted technical innovation, but also adopted effective innovation in the entire process of formulating the strategies. While the organization continued with its DVD mailing services till 2010, the organization kept on creating its o wn library of online media content to be offered to the viewers at lower price in the year of 2010 (Nan et al. 2016). Consumer resistance could have easily spoiled the entire strategy, had Netflix not offered an increasing size of Netflix library at a considerable low price. Hence, it is a self-evident fact that Netflix is indeed a remarkable example of disruptive innovation. Hastings, the Co-founder of Netflix managed to think beyond the immediate concern of the organization, Just like most of the start-up organizations, he could have remained content with the average profitability of its existent organization, instead he chose to re-invent to disrupt and replace the existent technology. It replaced the old and commonplace business model of DVD by mail, and instead it produced a model that intends to offer greater availability, affordability and accessibility to its consumers, especially to the underserved consumers of Blockbuster. Netflix proved that adapting is better, and with the introduction of the new business model of video streaming, the organization could much easily enjoy greater competitive advantage. However, it should be noted that while discussing and evaluating the business innovation of Netflix, much attention is also to be paid to the organizations recent innovative strategy. Presently, the organization has been focusing to create its ow n shows that can be broadcast exclusively on Netflix, and while so far they have been paying the cable networks, the new plan is letting Netflix charge price from the cable networks. This strategy is another remarkable instance of creative innovation, which will definitely help the organization stay at the very top of the market share. The realm of television is at once changing before the eyes of the viewers, as Netflix is offering innovation in each field, starting with the idea of video streaming, gaining access to videos on demand, to the lack of commercial intervention while viewing a favorite television show or movie. Will Netflix Remain the Dominating Power of Online Video Streaming? First of all, the major strategy that had helped in the growth and unquestionable success of Netflix is the innovative thought that the current business model of the organization is based on. The business model of video streaming was indeed nothing short of disruption that helped the consumers keep a series of online videos for as long as they wanted, in lieu of an affordable subscription rate (Bushnell et al. 2015). The innovative thought was indeed highly disruptive, and it helped to generate huge profit as the business model of video streaming offered a more convenient and a far more accessible way of watching television series and movies. Apart from the innovation strategy, the partnership strategy has also equally contributed to the organizational success of the company. The strategic partnership of Netflix with Apple is an example of the same. Netflix, as part of its partnership strategy with Apple, has allowed the consumers of the Apple set top box to gain access to Netflix directly. Further, these consumers of Apple set top box could also pay for the video service of Netflix via their I-tune accounts (Landi and Roberts 2013). This partnership strategy of Netflix not only helped the organization enhance its brand value by forming alliance with a highly prestigious company, but it also helped the company experience remarkable profit growth for gaining access to the large consumer base. The recurring income strategy of Netflix has also largely contributed to the growth of profitability of the company. Netflix usually follows a low price strategy, and intends to win the race slow and steady. The organization has always been well-aware of the potential competitors in the industry, and thus did not charge an incredibly high price for its unique service at the start. As the organization has been offering greater innovation in terms of the content to its consumers, it is increasing its subscription fees at a slow pace. Of late, Netflix has charged an extra $1 for its service, and consequently its sudden increase in price has not led to the loss of any client. In a research, 73% of the consumers were being reported to say that considering the high quality service, the consumers do not mind paying a little extra each month. The low price strategy thus has also been a major contributing factor in the organizational success of the company. The consumers have been regarded as the most important asset of Netflix, and hence the organization has seriously invested in the field of consumer value strategy. The management authority of Netflix has ensured that the company gets across the consumers as something beyond just a name in the movie rental service providing organization. The organization has continually researching over what the consumer wants to see. Hence, Netflix has recently incorporated some of the most popular English shows, such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards to ensure that the consumers are able to get 100% entertainment from their end (Jenner 2015). Last but not the least mention should be made of the promotional strategy of Netflix on the social media platforms. While most of the brands intend to play safe on social media, and put up a more formal approach while communicating their message with the consumers, Netflix employs a more informal and friendly method of interacting with the consumers. Instead of informing the viewers about the quality of their service or their popularity in the market of video streaming, Netflix interacts with the viewers by asking them if they have checked the latest episode of Ridiculous 6 or not. Besides, the organization also promotes its service by getting personal with each viewer, helping them feel a part of the Netflix family. A viewer with the app of Netflix, will get a special Recommended for You section, that provides a variety of television shows and films based on the personal interest of the particular consumer. How is Netflix Currently Performing? The strong international growth of Netflix, along with its innovative price strategy has led to the unprecedented success of Netflix. The US based streaming giant, Netflix has been found to be one of the best and most admirable organizations in the stock price market. In the first quarter of the year of 2015, the company has witnessed an increase in share by 60%, and by the end of the year Netflix has been one of the very few organizations that has indeed fared admirably well in the share market. With the continual growth in revenue, Netflix has also been launching its service in different, new foreign markets, including Japan, Portugal, Spain and Italy. According to a recent report by Netflix, the organization has succeeded in adding as many as 5.59 million new subscribers in the year of 2015 itself, that clearly explains the growth of the organization in the recent years (Jenner 2015). However, with the increase in popularity of the organization in the international market, Netflix is aiming to take over the entire world by the end of 2016, for entertaining the consumers of each nation. Reports number suggest that while in the year of 2014, the organization had its members streaming 29 billion hours, in the year of 2015, the total number of viewers were being found to stream 425 billion hours (Jenner 2015). Consequent upon this fact, the company managed to have 17 million net additions in the year of 2015, that has in turn helped the company feature the most popular films, such as The Ridiculous Six and Beast of No Nation (Halal 2015). Taking into consideration the price returns of the rival giants of Netflix, such as Time Warner and Amazon, it can be easily said that Netflix is far ahead of all its competitors. The shares of Netflix are found to head towards $ 600 million price mark and hence the present time is being considered to be the most favorable time for the company if it wants to carry out further acquisitions or issue its stock (Halal 2015). The future prospects of Netflix seem to be indeed very high, and hence it would be good to reflect over what the future of Netflix seems to be like. Till the present time, people have been considering the steaming service of Netflix to be a platform meant for enabling the viewers watches movies and a few selected original shows. However, Netflix presently is considering the option of incorporating the genre of reality shows as well. For example, Netflix is soon to include some of the most popular reality shows of all time, such as The Ultimate Beastmaster and The Biggest Loser. According to the chief content manager of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, the exploration of this reality TV genre is believed to capture the attention of larger number of viewers in the foreign markets. Any kind of unscripted television show helps in satisfying the curiosity of the foreign viewers about the art of living, food habits or nature of the people living abroad, and hence these shows are expected to lead to the increase of revenue. The organization is all set to roll out 600 hours of original content for the viewers. Considering the incredible growth that Netflix has been experiencing since the year of 2015, it can be easily said that the streaming video of Netflix in itself will emerge to be the ultimate future, with the streaming boxes such as Roku or Apple TV finally replacing the cable boxes very soon (Halal 2015). Besides, more importantly, it is also expected that considering the huge growth of annual revenue of Netflix, the company will form alliance with some of the biggest production houses of Hollywood. Consequently, some of the most awaited Hollywood movies will be first released via Netflix, and Netflix is likely to charge a early bird fee from its subscribers. However, it is to be noted that considering the huge competition, the organization is encountering from rival giants such as Amazon Prime, the company is likely to invest (approximately $ 6 billion) in the year of 2017 for ensuring better content for the viewers in the years to come (Halal 2015). Conclusion: To conclude, it should be noted that Netflix is an organization that has a great potential in the market, and will continue to remain the number 1 destination for online video streaming programs. The organization has not only checked the 60 million subscribers milestone, but has also succeeded to expand in 60 countries within a short span of time. The metamorphosis of Netflix is nothing short of being impressive, and presently the company is found to boast of highly compelling and original content on the entire planet. 10 Tips to study at exam time Essays

10 Tips to study at exam time Essays 10 Tips to study at exam time Essay 10 Tips to study at exam time Essay Examination periods bring head to students, but to all, there are some techniques that make them more bearable. Here we show you some tips that we hope you find them useful. Cheer up! Write by hand on paper: Write down what you’re trying to study for remember more easily. Research on the subject says that the act of writing produces the feedback of the brain, resulting in a motor memory which makes it easier to remember the long-term information. Typing or voice recording have the same result, so, even if it takes longer it is the best you can do. Move! Believe it or not, the place where you study can also produce different effects in studies. If you’ve been studying in your room, move to the kitchen table or scroll to the library. It can help you keep a clear mind, plus improved. Try meditation: It is scientifically proven that meditation improves test results: a recent study by the University of California, Santa Barbara specifically states that many college students improved their capacity to face the exams through meditation, while another study showed students who meditated before a conference got better on the test that was conducted after the conference that students who had not meditated. During the weeks before the exam, you have to try to sit quietly and focus, making breathing paused for 5 minutes a day, morning and evening, to improve concentration and clear the mind. Take a break: Study more it does not necessarily mean better study: Studies have shown that taking a break every 10 minutes to walk can help improve your concentration up to two hours later. Test yourself: Be tested one / a / herself can be an effective way to alleviate nerves exist before an exam and review those skills that we have forgotten. Research shows us that active study methods are more effective than other strategies (such summarize or underline). Drink plenty of water: This is very important: if you took too much coffee or energy drinks, something that is often used during exam periods, and have a dehydrating effect on our body, we should always have a water bottle handy when you are studying. Dehydration (even mild) can impair cognitive function and mental performance. Do not overcrowd: study everything the day before, it can seem a sure way to gain the knowledge, that you is entirely clear, but it is actually counterproductive, not only will you be exhausted when you get to review but will be tired and do not Wing will remember everything perfectly possible, like you’re rested. There is no quick solution to pass the exams, so our recommendation is to start to prepare a month before exams, at your own pace and time to rest the night before the test. Make a study group: Group study may be useful whenever you choose the right people and you focus on the notes. Try to limit the group to a maximum of 3 or 4 members and making a list of things you are going to study each time you are left. Divide and conquer: Not all tests that do have the same difficulty, thus there is no need to always study the same way, or given equal time to all tests: you must evaluate the test yourself depending on the difficulty and knowledge you have, let them take a longer sections or other†¦ Listen to music to relax: Listening to classical music can help the mind to stay focused. Research has shown that workers who listen to music do their jobs more efficiently than those who do not way, so why not do the same with our studies?

SLP internal analysis and SWOT Analysis

SLP internal analysis and SWOT Analysis Introduction Resource Based View is a modern day management tool that is used in crafting company’s strategy using the available resources and distinctive capabilities. One of the ways of achieving this is the use of Economic Values Added (EVA) or the Economic Rent (Connely, 2010). The EVA is gotten by subtracting the firm’s Net Operating Profit After tax (NOPAT) from the multiplication of the firm’s cost of capital by the firm’s capital i.e. NOPAT – (CAPITAL * COST OF CAPITAL).Advertising We will write a custom coursework sample on SLP internal analysis and SWOT Analysis specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A firm’s competitive advantage is therefore determined by its ability to use the available resources and utilize the core competencies to achieve targeted objectives (Barney, 1991). This paper discusses the various resources and competencies that an organizational can use to achieve competitiv e advantage over other firms. Sources Ensuing are two sources that offer information about these resources and competencies that provide a foundation for the formulation of a firm’s strategy. https://www.marketingteacher.com/swots these internal factors are resources such as human capital, patents, skills, goodwill and physical resources such as equipment and buildings. The disadvantage of this source is that the firm only uses internal environment to formulate the strategy ignoring the external environment which presents conditions that a business operates in. https://fba.aiub.edu/Files/Uploads/MGT110043.pdf. In his book, Henry presents the resource based view as a management tool for strategy formulation. Distinctive capabilities are useful in a firm’s competitiveness since the competitors are unable to duplicate them. The limitations of this source are that it looks at the firm which is established and has heavily invested in research and developments thus have acqu ired competencies in the specific operation area. Small firms are therefore not able to use these types of resources. Resources Resources are the inputs that a company uses in all the functional areas of its operations to produce the desired output and thus achieve the set target (Comeford Callaghan, 2011). Financial resources ensure that a firm has adequate amount of liquid cash to carry out the operations as well as finance the expected investments. This keeps the firm’s value high since its equity is not composed of large amounts of debt.Advertising Looking for coursework on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! A workforce that is highly competent will make sure that the firm’s products are of high quality and also the firm employs efficient producti on methods resulting in low production costs. Technical resources are intangible resources which enhance a firm’s products quality. Advanced technical knowledge in the production process ensures that the firm’s products are preferred over the competitors since they are of superior quality (Barney, 1991). This therefore acts as an important resource that will form a basis of customer loyalty hence boosting a firm’s profitability. Intellectual resources are resources that a firm has acquired through research and development. These include patents and copyrights. Patents ensure that a firm possesses the exclusive right over certain means of production (Barney, 1991). A firm considers patents as important assets since it is able to employ unique production methods to achieve better results than the competitors. Goodwill is resources which a firm bears that make provide a competitive advantage over others. It may be in form of location, first mover advantage or custo mer loyalty. Goodwill usually puts a firm at a better state than the competitors and usually results in customer loyalty. It is therefore important in formulation of the firm’s strategy since it will ensure that firm strategic location and actions that will make it favorable over the competitors. A firm’s reputation ensures that it bears goodwill and this acts to foster the customer loyalty on the products. Architecture is the ability of a firm to bear different structures and networks that ensure it is well positioned to take on the competition provided by the other market players. Art and cinema Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Art and cinema - Essay Example Beyond the artist or producer’s annotations on technology, often the audience is made aware of the fragile nature of portraying time within the work. Using a few film clips and reading examples, the paper will expound on the complex relationship between film and photography. Roland Barthes’ writing â€Å"The face of Garbo† clearly reflects one of the many intrinsic relationships between cinematography, film, and photography. In his work, Barthes idealizes actress Greta Garbo’s image. Garbo was undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most beautiful women in the 1930s; these was a period were imagery and film were akin. Before Hollywood’s golden age of the 30s, demand for photos and images for actors was just starting to take root. The 1920s saw the demand actors and actresses’ photos rise. With these demand, photography of many actors became idealized. Some critic even believed that many actors would be nothing without their photography. Greta Garbo’s photographs portray a specific mood, a type of flavor, a larger than life feeling. In the movie Camille Garbo, evoke similar sentiments to the audience. In the movie, Greta plays the role of Marguerite Gautier a beautiful young woman who eventually becomes known as Da me Camille. For years, Camille’s beauty was her main source of livelihood. Her beauty seduces one Baron de Varville to cover her finances. Garbo’s looks in the movie Camille plunge the audience into an elation that has equal magnitudes as her photos. The last twenty years have seen exponential improvement in technology. The fields of film and photography have not been left out in this aura. Today, Photoshop is prevalent in virtually all-photographic work in the internet, galleries and museums. In her work, â€Å"The Ballad of Sexual Dependency† photographer Nan Goldin is concerned about this implication. The ballad of sexual dependency spans from 1976 to the 80s is a work of reality and depicts Goldines life. Goldin has an intrinsic

Middle East Economy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Middle East Economy - Essay Example tton or other agricultural outputs sold to world markets by Middle Eastern countries in the 19th century, little has changed in the diversification of these economies. The manufacturing sector is limited due to a lack of raw goods, as is the high value goods sector or research and development. Part of the problem is the volatility of the region, but another part is how few economic reforms have occurred in the post-WWII period when so much of the rest of the world was changing. Instead, undemocratic leaders have seized power and mostly enriched themselves and their cronies instead of cutting red tape to allow private enterprise to flourish. Another aspect of this problem is that many Middle Eastern countries experimented with socialism to varying degrees during the 20th century, nationalizing whole sectors of their economies and mismanaging them. This is a legacy that is still playing out, unfortunately for the people of these countries. The few success stories, for example, Jordan a nd the UAE, have visionary leaders who have used their countries’ natural advantages to open up to the world and try new things, embracing trade and capitalism rather than the enervation of a state-directed economy.2 This is all a shame because the Middle East was the place where civilization began and for many years flourished. Some of the world’s first traders, businesspeople, and scientists came from the Middle East, something that is now far from the truth. In order to regain the standing this region once had they need to turn over their economies to their people rather than keeping them tied up in the hands of autocrats and their unelected henchman. They need to have a responsive form of politics—one that values opportunity and private enterprise not inwardness and

ENG C249 Tunneling and Underground Excavations ( Curriculum BACHELOR Essay

ENG C249 Tunneling and Underground Excavations ( Curriculum BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING IN CIVIL) - Essay Example Rock mechanics is a discipline of applied science. It is recognized as one of the most logical and rational engineering disciplines. It is the knowledge and understanding of the mechanical properties of rock, different methods for the study of rock-stress under some specific circumstances, various principles that express the rock mass response to load, and some coherent schemes for the application of rock-stress analysis methods to actual physical problems. Several factors have significantly contributed to the recognition of rock mechanics as a science of mining. If we talk about major causes for its recognition as a mining science, we can say that it is due to the increased development and advancement in underground mining activities. Krishnan, et al., (2000) found that underground mining operations act as one of the greatest motivating sources for the advancement in the field of rock mechanics. Rocks are used for two basic engineering purposes that include building construction and preparation of foundations. Understanding of the basic properties of rocks is very important for the professionals of the field of civil engineering because it allows the structures to be founded in an appropriate manner. In order to derive the analytical data on the physical characteristics of rock mass, the engineers use two basic measures. These measures include field-scale measures and laboratory measures. Field-scale measures are also known as rock mass properties and they are descriptions of the rock mass’s bulk strength properties. Whereas laboratory measures of rocks are analyzed in laboratory settings and are known as rock properties. They are obtained using field site’s samples. There are two types of mining openings, which are service openings and production openings. Brady and Brown (1992, p.197) state that service openings

A Guest Experience Based Upon Hospitality Marketing Essay

A Guest Experience Based Upon Hospitality Marketing Essay The rewards are the opportunity to create a guest experience based upon hospitality rather than efficiency, to implement customer service that makes memories rather than horror stories, to truly be in touch with guests rather than seeking to avoid them because a guest contact usually indicates a problem. Because of their size, small boutique properties often do not have the clout in the market to recruit and retain good line employees. Seasonality can have the happy retired hotelier making beds, doing laundry and unstopping toilets in the off-season when he/she has had to lay off the seasonal staff. Any furloughs due to seasonality pretty well guarantee that the quality labour in the market will go to a property with the mass to offer them year round employment. Operational Performance Objective: Flexibility Personal Approach LOCATION (segment market) COST (budget) Demand Service process Keep on changing customer Taste The four houses of quality function deployment connect customer needs with engineering design characteristics, components production processes, and associated control parameters http://www.naukrihub.com/india/hospitality/overview/challenges/ http://www.hotel-online.com/News/PR2006_4th/Nov06_ISHC.html http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3656/is_200612/ai_n17190382/ Q3 http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_2007_April_3/ai_n27189784/?tag=rbxcra.2.a.22 .http://www.managingchange.com/masscust/overview.htm http://www.hotel-online.com/Trends/ChiangMaiJun00/CustomizationHospitality.html#1 IMPORTANT http://www.smthacker.co.uk/postponement_mass_customisation.htm http://www.madeforone.com/Articles/index.php/page/2/ http://www.readwriteweb.com/start/2010/03/weekend-reading-mass-customization-round-up.php http://www.igi-global.com/bookstore/TitleDetails.aspx?TitleId=743DetailsType=Preface http://www.sideroad.com/Customer_Service/measuring-customer-loyalty.html http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/210546/hotels_and_hostels/new_trends_at_boutique_hotels.html 1. Shortage of skilled employees: One of the greatest challenges plaguing the hospitality industry is the unavailability of quality workforce in different skill levels. The hospitality industry has failed to retain good professionals. 2. Retaining quality workforce: Retention of the workforce through training and development in the hotel industry is a problem and attrition levels are too high. One of the reasons for this is unattractive wage packages. Though there is boom in the service sector, most of the hotel management graduates are joining other sectors like retail and aviation. Personalization and Design by Own Individualism (demand) Peoples lives today are more turbulent and diversified. The one size fits all model is out-of-date. Individuals now want to be seen and treated as individuals and many are prepared to pay for this. They are better educated and informed; able and willing to make their own decisions. http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/210548/hotels_and_hostels/unique_features_with_new_boutique_hotel_resort_trends.html _ boutique hotel http://www.hotel-online.com/Trends/ChiangMaiJun00/CustomizationHospitality.html Davis, Stan, Future Perfect, 10th anniversary edition, Addison-Wesley Pub Co, Harlow, England, 1996, ISBN: 020159045X Gilmore, James H. Pine, B. Joseph II 1997, The four faces of mass customization, in Gilmore, James H. Pine, B. Joseph II (eds.), Markets of One, President and Fellows of Harvard College, Boston MA, U.S.A. pp. 115-132 Introduction Boutique hotels are believed to have been invented in the early 1980s. (Anhar,L,2001) There is no single definition of a boutique hotel but most of the boutique hotels do share some common characteristics. The first, boutique hotels put more emphasis on design and architecture than traditional chain hotels. (Anhar.L.2001) Creating unique design with additional lifestyle amenities in order make hotel guest feel something special than others. For example each guest room in Blakes Hotel in South Kensington, London was designed by celebrity stylist Anouska Hempel. This kind of hotel is very individual and focuses on their look. (Jones.P,2002) The aim is to create an environment with sense of style, warmth and distinction which they are willing to pay premium room rates. Second, the common feature of boutique hotel is superior personal service.(Drayton.P Rodwell.K,2001) Providing personal service guide to hotel guests is importance to enhance guest experience rather than efficiency, to t ruly be in touch with hotel guests rather than ignorance them when they faced to problem, to makes guest with unforgettable memories will come back on next time rather than terrible service that not return again. Furthermore, boutique hotel tend to provide a higher quality and wider range of guest amenities; such as pillow menu, complimentary candies and nuts. (Reich.M Ho Jung Kim) The third feature is the number of rooms. The number of room should not exceed 150 rooms to maintain the intimacy between the guests and the hotel staff, and the personalized attention by the staff. (Anthar.L,2001) However, there seems to be not upper limit on the maximum number of room; for example among properties operated by Ian Schrager, Pramount Hotel has 594 rooms and Hudson Hotel has 821 rooms. (Ibid) The last common feature of boutique hotel is the target market. The middle to upper income group of people tend to be target market of boutique hotel. In addition, the image of boutique hotel is major element for promoting through media, fashion, entertainment and advertising companies that are attracted to the trendy design and lively atmosphere.(Jones Lang Lasalle report) Location of the boutique hotel can be classified into two types. The first is the city destination hotels. () Accordingly, most existing city boutique hotels are located in urban edgy and chic neighbourhoods in major cities like New York, London, San Francisco, and Miami. (Anthar) Nevertheless, more companies are targeting less cosmopolitan cities. Location of traditional hotels often seeks for convenience to their customer but for boutique hotel, they are often located in cities with big fashion capitals to best attract their target market. The second type of boutique hotel is located in generally well-hidden, tucked always in deserted corners of the island or the mountains. Each boutique resort hotels promote the non-existence of electronics and communication devices in guestrooms as a competitive advantage. () Q1 Every company will face problemà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ challenges Boutique hotel tend to serve their guest with high degree of service quality therefore the greater of customer contact, the greater degree of interaction between the service system and the customer. (Jacobs.R,Chase.R,2008) Service systems with high degree of customer contact are more difficult to control and rationalize rather than low degree of customer contact. In high-contact systems, the customer can affect the time of demand, the exact nature of the service, and the quality, or perceived quality of service because the hotel guests are involved in the process. (Jacobs.R,Chase.R,2008) This is reason why boutique hotel manager should take into account on this particular area of service design process. This is not easy as all customers are different and have different expectations of what the service will provide. Perhaps a boutique hotel guest tend to wait for too long to check-in at resulted he or she might not come again due with the expectation on their speed of their service provided was disappointment. Hence, boutique hotel can offers several counters with different type of function such as registration check-in, check-out counter, and complaint counter to shorten the time of waiting by other guests. Flexibility approach take part on this challenges, Service process must be short and accurate in order to SOA(219) Service Blueprinting 211 As mentioned above, for boutique hotel the customer indeed is greater extent involved in the actual delivery of the service. The service employees by boutique hotel have frequently work together with their customer thus the behaviour if employees is likely to have a major effect on the customers perceived level of service quality.(Greasley.A,2009) Unlike tangible products, technology can be replaced the workforce on certain jobs but in services, it is difficult to replace the element of human interaction completely. (Greasley.A,2009) For service industry, the service operation for boutique hotel greater front office tasks by adding value to their customer both input and output of the operation while back office task is lesser. (Figure 1.1)(Greasley.A, 2009) Boutique hotel as a mass customization operate at high volume and high variety because the customer require high levels of contact with the service provider and a customized service. Human resource development: Some of the service s required in the tourism and hotel industries are highly personalized, and no amount of automation can substitute for personal service providers. India is focusing more on white collar jobs than blue collar jobs. The shortage of blue collar employees will pose various threats to the industry Lack of skilled hotel employees can become an issue for boutique hotel that tend to provide superior personal service. STANDARD The hotel boutique employees are expected to know their guests needs very well with caring, polite, friendly, and etc. Hence, the manager of Boutique hotel has to invest on a series of training program in order to maintain the quality of the service provided by their employee especially front-line employees which interact with customer most of the time. Assume a boutique hotel employees does not know well about a potential customer whose is vegetarians, but sending meal with chicken to the customer. This in the result, the potential customer will feel very disappointed on the careless of service provider by particular boutique hotel. The customer definitely switches to other brand of boutique hotel and not to return again if there is no a good service recover to resolve the problem. Service is unlike product that can be easier to argue back but in service industry especially with high service quality provided by boutique hotel, customers tend to be correct most of the time. Quality is a particular challenge for boutique hotel in both the tangible and intangible aspects, for example the quality of the food served, the quality of the mattress in the room and service of the staff must meet quality standards in order to retain customer. However, intangible service may be difficult to measure and often depends on an unpredictable interaction between the service provider and customer. (Greasley.A, 2009) The boutique employees cannot predict what the next will be happen thus they have to get ready to resolve problem at anytime. However, there are three authors; Parasuraman, Zeithaml, and Berry (1985) define the quality in service with five principal dimensions that customers use to judge service quality which is Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, Empathy and Tangible based on a comparison between expectations and perceptions of the service quality. Marketing strategy: For the side of marketing view of point on boutique hotel, the image is very important to enhance the quality of the hotel itself to their target market. What are so special about boutique hotel compare to other hotel chain without paying high price of room rate? This is why Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) gets involved to work together to promote the brand and image of boutique hotel. A good service cannot be successful without the demand in a market. To open a new boutique hotel in a market place obviously is very fresh on the particular brand. Hence, branding can become one of the challenges to a new boutique hotel. At that point, the new brands that were ill-conceived and lacking clear definition and marketability ultimately become the weaker performers which are then often absorbed by the stronger ones.( ISHC Annual Conference,2007)Investing on brand proliferation to attract consumer interest toward the new boutique hotel. Marketing research effort s hould not be neglected by collecting information on favourable design of hotel room, service encounter and etc. By doing marketing research better performance outcome in order to meet customer needs. Virtual advertising can be useful to let customer know more information about the boutique hotel. An addition, online booking hotel becomes more convenience to customer in the purchase processes. A system that can let customer choose the theme or design of the room that they prefer including the menu of pillow, type of food to serve and etc. Public relation is also a powerful tool to get useful public opinion from the public. Distribution channel renovation : In 2006, it is estimated that $24 billion worth of hotel rooms in the US alone will be booked through internet sites representing 27% of US hotel industry room revenues up from $15.5 billion just two years ago. (INSH,2007) Meanwhile, this is current challenge of distribution management, manage and market to the consumer in the online world. Without understanding online consumers buying behaviour, the possible investment on marketing will be wasted. Buying process change rapidly nowadays with advancement of technology device support. Brick and Motor Directors of Sales Marketing and Directors of Revenue Management must understand at least the basics of search engine optimization, pay-per-click marketing, link popularity strategies and web traffic analysis. (INSH,2007) Connection between the service provider and their potential customer is linked. Expanding distribution revolution preserves the relationship with their customer. (INSH,2007) Click and M ortar approach can be applied on boutique hotel strategy in order to serve the best quality by using online or offline form of service provided. Construction cost: To build up a new boutique hotel, cost definitely has to take into account because it involved a huge amount of money on constructing, furniture, equipments and labour cost. The cost of raw materials for construction such as wood, steel, sand and so on is categorized as dramatically changes according the demand of the world. For example steel prices experienced a 48.8-percent increase in 2004, which was preceded by significant increases in scrap iron and steel prices in 2002 and 2003.(INSH,2007) By constantly monitoring changes in the markets for both construction materials and labor costs, a developer has to ensure that a project has a better than even chance of being completed on time and on budget.(INSH,2007) Adoptability and Knowledgeable on new technology system: In this 21th century with all digital-based of world with high-technology advancement that can improving the effectively and efficiently of doing things. The research and development (RD) department have to gone through emphasis on the design of the room in boutique hotel. Supply and demand service capacity : skilled employees or unskilled employeesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Training Demand of the market : middle to upper class. Fashion ,media Finance Q2 Mass processes that produce high-volume and low variety products are termed line or mass processes. Because of the high volumes of product it is cost-effective to use specialized labour and equipment. Because of the low variety, setting up of equipment is minimized and utilization of equipment is high. Examples of mass process included automobile plant, television factory, vehicle manufacturing, DVD production and food processes. (pg78) Customization processes is special customized to the need of the customer. High variety of product but low volume. This customization processes can be applied on goods such as big size shoes, special design for wedding cake and while service on or services like facial treatment, cosmetic, and hair style that can meet individual needs. The target market is niche market with a small group of people with the similar needs. High degree of customization, in order to meet individual customer needs. For exampleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Because the need of specialized, time-consuming to finish on certain number (usually with low quantity) However, the variety is very low for mass processes, customer could not have much choices. Meanwhile, with the customization goods and services the price is trend to expensive. It is difficult to meet individual needs with low cost. It can be either want to pay higher price to meet individual price or low price but no choice. Based on the statement above, the trend of the layout process changed to Mass customization. What is mass customization? Mass customization is processes that combine the Mass and Customization feature in one which mean high volume and high variety at a relatively. (Figure 1.2) An attempt to combine high-variety and hiagh-volume output to provide the customer with customized products at a relatively low price. ( Greasley.A,2009)was typothie si s For example, Dell is the worlds largest volume producer of personal computers yet allows each customer to design (albeit in a limited sense) their own configuration. (Slack et al, 2007,pg47) Customer can select the feature of specification of the computer that they wanted after that make an order. Once Dell received the order, they will make customized computer requirement by the customer and delivery to them within two weeks. Another example on Land à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. Feel different from others. Repeat buyer. Capture their interest and follow up by sending greeting card to welcome back to the boutique hotel interested like music. Event singing competition. Instruments of Change :: Third World Socialism Essays

Instruments of Change In the Third World today, many countries are changing to become more modernized. They are leaving behind much of their traditional features and trying to become more like the west. In order for this change to take place, there has to be some type of driving force. These elements of change are: the military, charismatic leadership and ideology. One of the most prevalent methods for bringing about change is the military. In many third world countries, the military's primary mission is to quell domestic unrest, unlike the west with it's offensive minded forces. This concentration on domestic policing makes the military an effective means for gaining control of power. When the military itself takes over control of a country's government, it is called a coup d'etat. The military takes over all the government agencies and broadcasting facilities and then enforces marshal law. The people of the nation are powerless to stop the military. Sometimes, as in the case of Iran, the military turns against its leaders and fights for the people. When the military takes over, it is often led by a few rouge officers who feel that they have the country's best interest at heart. In Egypt, a few officers from the working class banded together to form "The Free Officers." These men decided to take control of power in Egypt in order to get their country out of British control. After coming to power in Egypt, the "The Free Officers" took over the high positions in government. However one man became more powerful then the others due to the power of his charisma. Nasser delivered a speech in Alexandria in 1953 in which an attempt was made on his life. Shots were fired but Nasser did not flinch and instead said, "I live for Egypt, I die for Egypt." It was at this point that Nasser became a charismatic leader. He now was free to take more control of the government with little or no opposition due to his popularity. A charismatic leader like Nasser can effect more then just one nation. Nasser became a leader for the entire third world and was responsible for many changes in his country. His affect on people was so great that upon his death over 40 million people attended his funeral and others committed suicide. In addition to the military and charismatic leadership bringing about change, a new type of ideology can also bring about change.

Comparing Country and City Life

Comparing Country and City Life Some people think that city life has more benefits than country life; however, some people agree that country life is a â€Å"real life†. Like hearing natures music, or seeing sights of the land and its natural beauty. Even though city living and country living might have their similarities, a broader perspective shows that they both have some differences in conveniences, life conditions, and people’s characteristics. The first similarity is convenience. Most people argue that this is only a characteristic of city life, but that is not always true. For example, even though both have access to places such as hospitals, malls, restaurants, or church, still, they vary in time to commute to these facilities. While in a big city, the travel to the store might be further than in the country. It is also true that they have better schools in the city, such as colleges, universities, and even transportation, such as a metro, to these schools. Both the country and city have high, middle, and elementary schools. Both living conditions offer conveniences, but they are reflected differently in time. Some people believe that life in the city provides better job opportunities than in the country. This is not wrong because you have a stronger population rise in the city, which calls for more companies with better salary earning. People in the city also have better options of how to spend their free time. For instance, people can visit various museums, cinemas, and libraries. People in the country do not have laundry mats, car washes, or beauty salons. In contrast, there are plenty of these in the city. People living in the country feel themselves in safety. The crime rate in the country is way lower than in the city. Most people that live in the country are also very friendly. My cousin has lived in the country for three years and says that he has a bunch of friends there. Therefore, she never considers moving to the city. In the city , pollution surrounds people wherever they go, whether it’s on the streets or on the lawn of a large park.Pollution could possibly cause health problems later on in life. In the country, pollution is scarce. Fresh air, rolling green hills, a few pieces of litter, but for the most part everything is cleaner. In the city, housing and food are expensive. Services such as transportation are also expensive, and almost mandatory. Worst of all, the most expensive component of life in the city is the toll it takes on your body through stress. Stress can be present in the city in almost any situation. The crowds, traffic, or even tight work schedules. The country life is very peaceful. The night is quiet. No heavy traffic, no sirens, no rush of the â€Å"morning crowd†. Life is simple and calming. In conclusion, personally, I experienced both living in the big city, where I was born, and living in the small country, where I live now. In my opinion, life in the country is quiet a nd slow. Therefore, it is more suitable for children and old people. I prefer living in a big city, where I can have a vast amount of opportunities in front of me.

The Citizen Genêt Affair of 1793

The Citizen Genà ªt Affair of 1793 The new United States federal government had largely managed to avoid serious diplomatic incidents until 1793. And then along came Citizen Genà ªt. Now more infamously known as â€Å"Citizen Genà ªt,† Edmond Charles Genà ªt served as France’s foreign minister to the United States from 1793 to 1794. Rather than maintaining friendly relationships between the two nations, Genà ªt’s activities entangled France and the United States in a diplomatic crisis that endangered the United States government’s attempts to remain neutral in the conflict between Great Britain and Revolutionary France. While France ultimately resolved the dispute by removing Genà ªt from his position, the events of the Citizen Genà ªt affair forced the United States to create its first set of procedures governing international neutrality. Citizen Genà ªt Edmond Charles Genà ªt was virtually raised to be a government diplomat. Born in Versailles in 1763, he was the ninth son of a lifelong French civil servant, Edmond Jacques Genà ªt, a head clerk in the ministry of foreign affairs. The elder Genà ªt analyzed British naval strength during the Seven Years War and monitored the progress of the American Revolutionary War. By the age of 12, the young Edmond Genà ªt was considered a prodigy due to his ability to read French, English, Italian, Latin, Swedish, Greek, and German. In 1781, at age 18, Genà ªt was appointed court translator and in 1788 was assigned to the French embassy in Saint Petersburg, Russia to serve as ambassador. Genà ªt eventually came to despise all monarchical systems of government, including not only the French monarchy but the Tsarist Russian regime under Catherine the Great, as well. Needless to say, Catherine was offended and in 1792, declared Genà ªt persona non grata, calling his presence â€Å"not only superfluous but even intolerable.† The same year, the anti-monarchist Girondist group rose to power in France and appointed Genà ªt to his post of minister to the United States. Diplomatic Setting of the Citizen Genà ªt Affair During the 1790s, American foreign policy was dominated by the multi-national fallout being generated by the French Revolution. After the violent overthrow of the French monarchy in 1792, the French revolutionary government faced an often-violent colonial power struggle with the monarchies of Great Britain and Spain. In 1793, President George Washington had just appointed former U.S. ambassador to France Thomas Jefferson as America’s first Secretary of State. When the French Revolution led to war between America’s top trade partner Britain and American Revolution ally France, President Washington urged Jefferson, along with the rest of his Cabinet, to maintain a policy of neutrality. However, Jefferson, as leader of the anti-federalist Democratic-Republican Party, sympathized with the French revolutionaries. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, leader of the Federalist Party, favored maintaining existing alliances- and treaties- with Great Britain. Convinced that supporting either Great Britain or France in a war would place the still comparatively weak United States in imminent danger of invasion by foreign armies, Washington issued a proclamation of neutrality on April 22, 1793. It was this setting that the French government sent Genà ªt – one of its most experienced diplomats- to America to seek the U.S. government’s help in protecting its colonies in the Caribbean. As far as the French government was concerned, America could help them as either an active military ally or as a neutral supplier of arms and materials. Genà ªt was also assigned to: Obtain advance payments on debts owed to France by the United States;Negotiate a commercial agreement between the United States and France; andImplement provisions of the 1778 Franco-American treaty allowing France to attack British merchant ships using French ships stationed in American ports. Unfortunately, Genà ªt’s actions in trying to carry out his mission would bring him – and potentially his government- into direct conflict with the U.S. government. Hello, America. I’m Citizen Genà ªt and I’m Here to Help As soon as he stepped off the ship in Charleston, South Carolina on April 8, 1793, Genà ªt introduced himself as â€Å"Citizen Genà ªt† in an effort to emphasize his pro-revolutionary stance. Genà ªt hoped his affection for French revolutionaries would help him win the hearts and minds of Americans who had recently fought their own revolution, with the help of France, of course. The first American heart and mind Genà ªt apparently won belonged to South Carolina governor William Moultrie. Genà ªt convinced Gov. Moultrie to issue privateering commissions that authorized the bearers, regardless of their country of origin, to board and seize British merchant ships and their cargo for their own profit, with the approval and protection of the French government. In May 1793, Genà ªt arrived in Philadelphia, then the U.S. capital. However, when he presented his diplomatic credentials, Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson told him that President Washington’s Cabinet considered his agreement with Gov. Moultrie sanctioning the operations of foreign privateers in American seaports to be a violation of the U.S. policy of neutrality. Taking more wind from Genà ªt’s sails, the U.S. Government, already holding favorable trade privileges in French ports, refused to negotiate a new trade treaty. Washington’s Cabinet also refused Genà ªt’s request for advance payments on U.S. debts to the French government. Genà ªt Defies Washington Not to be deterred by the U.S. government’s warnings, Genà ªt began outfitting another French pirate ship in Charleston Harbor named the Little Democrat. Defying further warnings from U.S. officials to not allow the ship to leave port, Genà ªt continued to prepare the Little Democrat to sail. Further fanning the flames, Genà ªt threatened to bypass the U.S. government by taking his case for French piracy of British ships to the American people, who he believed would back his cause. However, Genà ªt failed to realize that President Washington- and his international neutrality policy- enjoyed great public popularity. Even as President Washington’s Cabinet was discussing how to convince the French government to recall him, Citizen Genà ªt allowed the Little Democrat to sail and begin attacking British merchant ships. Upon learning of this direct violation of the U.S. government’s neutrality policy, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton asked Secretary of State Jefferson to immediately expel Genà ªt from the United States. Jefferson, however, decided to take the more diplomatic tact of sending a request Genà ªt’s recall to the French government. By the time Jefferson’s request for Genà ªt’s recall reached France, political power within the French government shifted. The radical Jacobins group had replaced the slightly less radical Girondins, who had originally sent Genà ªt to the United States. The foreign policy of the Jacobins favored maintaining friendlier relations with neutral countries that could provide France with crucially needed food. Already unhappy with his failure to fulfill his diplomatic mission and suspecting him of remaining loyal to the Girondins, the French government stripped Genà ªt of his position and demanded that the U.S. government hand him over to French officials sent to replace him. Aware that Genà ªt’s return to France would almost certainly result in his execution, President Washington and Attorney General Edmund Randolph allowed him to remain in the United States. The Citizen Genà ªt affair came to a peaceful end, with Genà ªt himself continuing to reside in the United States until his death in 1834. The Citizen Genà ªt Affair Solidified  US Neutrality Policy In response to the Citizen Genà ªt affair, the United States immediately established a formal policy regarding international neutrality. On August 3, 1793, President Washington’s Cabinet unanimously signed a set of regulations regarding neutrality. Less than a year later, on June 4, 1794, Congress formalized those regulations with its passage of the Neutrality Act of 1794. As the basis for U.S. neutrality policy, the Neutrality Act of 1794 makes it illegal for any American to wage war against any country currently at peace with the United States. In part, the Act declares: â€Å"If any person shall within the territory or jurisdiction of the United States begin or set on foot or provide or prepare the means for any military expedition or enterprise ... against the territory or dominions of any foreign prince or state of whom the United States was at peace that person would be guilty of a misdemeanor.† Although amended several times over the years, the Neutrality Act of 1794 remains in force today.

Political science Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Political science - Essay Example In such a way, the following analysis will seek to provide something of a discussion and analysis of the more pertinent issues and relevant tidbits of information that were presented within the documentary entitled â€Å"The Murder of Emmett Till†. Furthermore, an analysis and discussion with regards to whether or not this particular topic and/or part of history should be taught in high school will also be engaged. Firstly, as has been stated, the most relevant hardship is with regards to seeking to understand how any society could not only access the murder of innocent black teen but also find no wrongdoing with regards to those acquitted of this horrific and brutal murder is nearly incomprehensible. Naturally, the documentary itself goes into a great deal of death concerning the racial prejudice, bigotry, and hatred that existed at that time. However, notwithstanding this, such a brazen defiance of morality and the criminal justice system still does not help the reader to ga in an understanding of how such a crime could have taken place and gone completely and entirely unpunished; even in an era of horrific racial prejudice and a biased justice system. ... Rather, the most obvious reason for why such an equal place was due to the fact that the jury was sympathetic to the overtly racist and bigoted interpretations of a Mississippi that still viewed the Civil War as the greatest loss to the white race and to the way of life that they experience even within their own time. An interesting compliments that helps to prove the fact that this wasn’t be what we would label a â€Å"hate crime† within the current era is the fact that Emmett was thrown into the river with a cotton gin tied around his neck. More than merely having a crime of passion dictate that the child was murdered by an obsessive and jealous husband, the nature of the fact that Emmett was viewed as overstepping the racial boundaries that he should have been observing was directly denoted in the fact that a machine for separating cotton from the scenes was used to sink his lifeless body in a local river. This was not done merely out of convenience; instead, it was done as a statement to the fact that as a young African-American, this place was working in the fields under the supervision and direction of whites. With regards to answer the question of whether or not this is a relevant topic and should be taught within high schools, it is the firm belief of this author that it is the most relevant topics and at least cases similar to this should most certainly be discussed. The ultimate reason underlying this is the fact that even though this particular case is only one within a great multitude of cases that represent horrific and abject racism within a deep South, it nonetheless helps to take a picture why racial relations within the United States has continued to be such a dominant theme since the time of the end of

HEALTH SOCIILOGY Class & Illnessrelated behaviour Essay

HEALTH SOCIILOGY Class & Illnessrelated behaviour - Essay Example Thus, manual working class groups are seen as a more probable victim of this habit rather than the management or professional classes. The first and foremost social factor that affects the habitual addiction to smoking is the environment surrounding the individual. The living conditions of these workers are poor and dire. Many live in stressful lives in squalid and overcrowded homes. The best escape from all of this frustration is smoking which provides a stimulus to forget other problems. Also, in an atmosphere where each individual seeks to pass time using smoking, it is difficult for an individual to escape the vicious pattern unharmed. Another aspect attached the poor living conditions are how the families live in such close quarters that the children are affected by the adults. For the child to see a older individual smoking is the sort of parental and adult model that is set out for them. As they continue with life, the environment around them forces them into a state of peer pressure that instills smoking as a habit (Pedersen and Lavik). Another factor affecting smoking is the varying degree of education given to the different classes in a society. While the upper classes get the knowledge useful in their choices, the lower ones lack this kind of proper education (Layte and Whelan).

The Inhabited Woman Essay Example for Free

The Inhabited Woman Essay La Mujer Habitada (The Inhabited Woman), a semi-autobiographical novel of Gioconda Belli. The novel, which was published in 1998 foster much attention. The novel dealt with the Sandinistas struggle for liberation as well as her native Nicaraguan feminist effort to be recognized and achieved equal rights in a patriarchal society (Salgado 235). â€Å"The Inhabited Woman grabs us from two unexpected directions: its consciousness of the centrality of woman in struggle, and its retrieval of the cycles of birth and rebirth which are such an important part of indigenous cosmology (Randall 6). † The novel also dealt with gender issue in Nicaraguan revolutionary narratives. To Timothy Richards, this is a narrative of female struggle in society, through a progressively more comprehensive involvement in her society, [the protagonist] learns to distinguish the true from the false in her and the world around her (Belli 209). Lavinia, who is an upper class woman, also carries out her own feminist struggle by refusing to get married. She chooses her independency over her lover. Lavinia, believed that marriage, would mean placing limitations to one’s self—unless, the right man would came along (Belli 22). She begun to accept and embraces the principles of the movement. Her being an oligarch is quite apparent in her conversation with her childhood friends Sara and her husband Andrian as well as her parents. The main character of the story, also wanted to proved her worth as a person – her struggle to proved her knowledge will be eventually unravel in the story – she as an architect strive to prove her self worth and received a lot of merits.   In the field where men always dominate – Lavinia proved them wrong. She, despite the adversities in life in the long run succeeded in the field where men dominate, which implicates the gender and/or feminist struggle of the novel. Similar with Lavinia, Gioconda also proved their worth as a person – her choice to be involve in the movement is in itself a worth proving decision. Leaving the life of luxury and offering life in the service of the people is a tough and firm decision to make. Putting your life to danger in exchange of serving the oppressed and underprivileged people. The rampant oppressions, which she herself is an eye-witness, inflame the nationalistic spirit in her. As the novel continues, the parallelism between the main character, Lavinia and the writer herself is being introduced gradually. Both were raised in an upper class family, had a good educational background and were raised in a society suffering from political and economic turmoil. Both were also living a life of luxury and extravagance. But both women, decided not to be indifferent about the current political situation of the country. They both were determined to struggle the rights of the underprivileged, less fortunate and oppressed majority. Belli, met someone from the movement whom she got intimately involved while Lavinia met Adrian her husband before she met Felipe, whom introduced her to the ideology of the movement. Lavinia and Belli were involved in the movement at time when both were still at a young age. Their young age did not get into the way of their involvement in the movement. In fact, during those times they were envisioning their society to be more kind among its people. Their realization to this inspires them to get into a more cause oriented and more meaningful engagement in society. The formal years were quite a struggle for both, since they were raised in a well to do family. But as the novel continues Lavinia found herself to being involved in the revolutionary movement while on the part of Belli, she recognizes that these oppressions must end. In order to end the suffering and oppression of the people, one has to get involved and make a difference. In substantiating the above claim, Belli and Lavinia, the main character of the novel, were raised in a conservative and protective family. Belli, decided to join the Sandinista movement because of her belief that oppression and suffering under the Somoza regime must come to and end. She became deeply involved in the movement and later on played a significant role. Belli became the courier of the movement during the height of the oppression. And because of her deep involvement in the Sandinista movement, she exiled in Mexico in 1975. In 1979, the overthrow the Somoza regime, Belli continued her involvement in the movement and she took several important posts. In 1982, she became the FSLN (Frente Sandinista de la Liberacià ³n Nacional) liaison officer. Then in 1984, she became the director of State Communications and was responsible in organizing major literacy programs and projects. Just like the novel, during the 1970, Managua is experiencing a political and social turmoil. The Inhabited Woman is based on an episode of Nicaraguan experience, where oppression and injustices are rampant. This is where the novel took off its narrative. All the events if not all that was reflected in the novel were all inspired in the current political and society’s situation (March 53). As for Lavinia, her lover Felipe, became instrumental to her involvement in the revolutionary movement. The movement intends to overthrow the current military dictatorship governing the whole country.   Notice that both Lavinia and Gioconda were influenced by their lovers to be involved in their respective revolutionary struggle. Both struggled wanting achieve national liberation and recognizing equal rights of the people (March 83). Gioconda was recruited in the revolution by the Camilo Ortega, but the one who really inspired was the one whom she called ‘the poet.’ Belli felt that she could transform her life and empower herself as a citizen and as a person, this realization allowed her to break from her marriage. A marriage where she was quite unhappy. It was a combination of things that led her to defy convention and have that affair with the ‘Poet’ (Salgado 237). It was also the time of the sexual liberation. People were talking about open marriages. It was all those things combined. She emphasized that her my political stance was never determined by the men she was with. Belli had her own ideas and convictions. She exemplifies her admiration with the ‘Poet’ because Belli believed that he opened doors for her not only in terms of getting to know the Nicaraguan history better as well as everything that was going on in Latin American literature. The ‘poet’ had imprinted a great influenced to her, as an individual and a writer. Take note that, Felipe had also been influential to Lavinia’s social awareness – their frequent conversation which led to her deep involvement in the revolution is exemplifies in this manner. Under the protection of the tree, the young protagonist and Felipe discuss the revolution and the role of women in it. And, it is during these discussions that Lavinias social consciousness is awakened (March 235). In the novel, Lavinia, the main character often goes to a secluded part where her grandfather stays. She returns to her home when she needed time to think and to get away from the crowded and strident sound which the city brings. Like Gioconda, she often remembered her country where she was raised by her family – where she was educated and she became socially conscious about the current situation of her country. She oftentimes, felt that longingness and going back to where she really belonged. Noticed the following narration of the writer: It was a clear day. The landscape disrobed at her feet, devoid of fog. The tiny houses, the lake, the row of blue volcanoes, were spread out in the distance, silent, motionless, majestic. Up closer, the vegetation in the mountains unfolded in green toward the valley where the city lay. Twisted tree trunks hung dangerously over the edge. [ J This landscape was hers, her idea of homeland; this is what she dreamed of when she found herself on the other side of the ocean. This landscape made the most outlandish dreams of the Movement understandable. This land sang to her flesh and blood, to her sense of being a woman in love, rebelling against opulence and misery. [] This land deserved a better fate. (Belli 348-49) The narration above depicts the idealized and post-revolutionary Faguas which was Lavinia is fighting for – where wealth and misery is not a problem anymore. Belli, dreamt of it in her life. In fact he fought for it, she envision a country with no repressive army, freedom and democratic responsibilities. During the height of the dictatorship, Belli handled few accounts that had to do with businesses with Somoza regime. And because of that she was able to extract documents, which later on she provided to the Sandinista movement. The character of Lavinia in the novel also worked with the ruling regime. Thus, substantiate the parallelism between the two, Belli and Lavinia. As much as Lavinia hated the military leaders she had no choice but to work with them. She had to meet and had conversations with people from the government, whom actually she despised. Belli, on the other hand had also experience that of Lavinia’s sentiments in the novel. Belli, actually had to go to different embassies and talk to people whom she don’t like that much. As far as their revolutionary experience is concerned, both women continued to contribute to the success of the movement. Belli, played an important role in the Sandinistas Movement same as Lavinia when she become involved in the revolutionary movement. She dedicated her life in the struggle to eradicate oppression and injustices. And she even forsakes her life to realize that goal. Lavinia during the height of her consciousness held various educational discussions among several groups to raise their consciousness. Also the discussion between Itza and the main character Lavinia reveals this claim. Belli, on the other also organized group discussions among citizens of Nicaragua to rouse their consciousness as to what is happening in their society. And to encourage them to stand for their rights and liberate themselves from the oppressive ruler of their country.
