HEALTH SOCIILOGY Class & Illnessrelated behaviour Essay
HEALTH SOCIILOGY Class & Illnessrelated behaviour - Essay Example Thus, manual working class groups are seen as a more probable victim of this habit rather than the management or professional classes. The first and foremost social factor that affects the habitual addiction to smoking is the environment surrounding the individual. The living conditions of these workers are poor and dire. Many live in stressful lives in squalid and overcrowded homes. The best escape from all of this frustration is smoking which provides a stimulus to forget other problems. Also, in an atmosphere where each individual seeks to pass time using smoking, it is difficult for an individual to escape the vicious pattern unharmed. Another aspect attached the poor living conditions are how the families live in such close quarters that the children are affected by the adults. For the child to see a older individual smoking is the sort of parental and adult model that is set out for them. As they continue with life, the environment around them forces them into a state of peer pressure that instills smoking as a habit (Pedersen and Lavik). Another factor affecting smoking is the varying degree of education given to the different classes in a society. While the upper classes get the knowledge useful in their choices, the lower ones lack this kind of proper education (Layte and Whelan).

The Inhabited Woman Essay Example for Free
The Inhabited Woman Essay La Mujer Habitada (The Inhabited Woman), a semi-autobiographical novel of Gioconda Belli. The novel, which was published in 1998 foster much attention. The novel dealt with the Sandinistas struggle for liberation as well as her native Nicaraguan feminist effort to be recognized and achieved equal rights in a patriarchal society (Salgado 235). ââ¬Å"The Inhabited Woman grabs us from two unexpected directions: its consciousness of the centrality of woman in struggle, and its retrieval of the cycles of birth and rebirth which are such an important part of indigenous cosmology (Randall 6). â⬠The novel also dealt with gender issue in Nicaraguan revolutionary narratives. To Timothy Richards, this is a narrative of female struggle in society, through a progressively more comprehensive involvement in her society, [the protagonist] learns to distinguish the true from the false in her and the world around her (Belli 209). Lavinia, who is an upper class woman, also carries out her own feminist struggle by refusing to get married. She chooses her independency over her lover. Lavinia, believed that marriage, would mean placing limitations to oneââ¬â¢s selfââ¬âunless, the right man would came along (Belli 22). She begun to accept and embraces the principles of the movement. Her being an oligarch is quite apparent in her conversation with her childhood friends Sara and her husband Andrian as well as her parents. The main character of the story, also wanted to proved her worth as a person ââ¬â her struggle to proved her knowledge will be eventually unravel in the story ââ¬â she as an architect strive to prove her self worth and received a lot of merits. à In the field where men always dominate ââ¬â Lavinia proved them wrong. She, despite the adversities in life in the long run succeeded in the field where men dominate, which implicates the gender and/or feminist struggle of the novel. Similar with Lavinia, Gioconda also proved their worth as a person ââ¬â her choice to be involve in the movement is in itself a worth proving decision. Leaving the life of luxury and offering life in the service of the people is a tough and firm decision to make. Putting your life to danger in exchange of serving the oppressed and underprivileged people. The rampant oppressions, which she herself is an eye-witness, inflame the nationalistic spirit in her. As the novel continues, the parallelism between the main character, Lavinia and the writer herself is being introduced gradually. Both were raised in an upper class family, had a good educational background and were raised in a society suffering from political and economic turmoil. Both were also living a life of luxury and extravagance. But both women, decided not to be indifferent about the current political situation of the country. They both were determined to struggle the rights of the underprivileged, less fortunate and oppressed majority. Belli, met someone from the movement whom she got intimately involved while Lavinia met Adrian her husband before she met Felipe, whom introduced her to the ideology of the movement. Lavinia and Belli were involved in the movement at time when both were still at a young age. Their young age did not get into the way of their involvement in the movement. In fact, during those times they were envisioning their society to be more kind among its people. Their realization to this inspires them to get into a more cause oriented and more meaningful engagement in society. The formal years were quite a struggle for both, since they were raised in a well to do family. But as the novel continues Lavinia found herself to being involved in the revolutionary movement while on the part of Belli, she recognizes that these oppressions must end. In order to end the suffering and oppression of the people, one has to get involved and make a difference. In substantiating the above claim, Belli and Lavinia, the main character of the novel, were raised in a conservative and protective family. Belli, decided to join the Sandinista movement because of her belief that oppression and suffering under the Somoza regime must come to and end. She became deeply involved in the movement and later on played a significant role. Belli became the courier of the movement during the height of the oppression. And because of her deep involvement in the Sandinista movement, she exiled in Mexico in 1975. In 1979, the overthrow the Somoza regime, Belli continued her involvement in the movement and she took several important posts. In 1982, she became the FSLN (Frente Sandinista de la Liberacià ³n Nacional) liaison officer. Then in 1984, she became the director of State Communications and was responsible in organizing major literacy programs and projects. Just like the novel, during the 1970, Managua is experiencing a political and social turmoil. The Inhabited Woman is based on an episode of Nicaraguan experience, where oppression and injustices are rampant. This is where the novel took off its narrative. All the events if not all that was reflected in the novel were all inspired in the current political and societyââ¬â¢s situation (March 53). As for Lavinia, her lover Felipe, became instrumental to her involvement in the revolutionary movement. The movement intends to overthrow the current military dictatorship governing the whole country. à Notice that both Lavinia and Gioconda were influenced by their lovers to be involved in their respective revolutionary struggle. Both struggled wanting achieve national liberation and recognizing equal rights of the people (March 83). Gioconda was recruited in the revolution by the Camilo Ortega, but the one who really inspired was the one whom she called ââ¬Ëthe poet.ââ¬â¢ Belli felt that she could transform her life and empower herself as a citizen and as a person, this realization allowed her to break from her marriage. A marriage where she was quite unhappy. It was a combination of things that led her to defy convention and have that affair with the ââ¬ËPoetââ¬â¢ (Salgado 237). It was also the time of the sexual liberation. People were talking about open marriages. It was all those things combined. She emphasized that her my political stance was never determined by the men she was with. Belli had her own ideas and convictions. She exemplifies her admiration with the ââ¬ËPoetââ¬â¢ because Belli believed that he opened doors for her not only in terms of getting to know the Nicaraguan history better as well as everything that was going on in Latin American literature. The ââ¬Ëpoetââ¬â¢ had imprinted a great influenced to her, as an individual and a writer. Take note that, Felipe had also been influential to Laviniaââ¬â¢s social awareness ââ¬â their frequent conversation which led to her deep involvement in the revolution is exemplifies in this manner. Under the protection of the tree, the young protagonist and Felipe discuss the revolution and the role of women in it. And, it is during these discussions that Lavinias social consciousness is awakened (March 235). In the novel, Lavinia, the main character often goes to a secluded part where her grandfather stays. She returns to her home when she needed time to think and to get away from the crowded and strident sound which the city brings. Like Gioconda, she often remembered her country where she was raised by her family ââ¬â where she was educated and she became socially conscious about the current situation of her country. She oftentimes, felt that longingness and going back to where she really belonged. Noticed the following narration of the writer: It was a clear day. The landscape disrobed at her feet, devoid of fog. The tiny houses, the lake, the row of blue volcanoes, were spread out in the distance, silent, motionless, majestic. Up closer, the vegetation in the mountains unfolded in green toward the valley where the city lay. Twisted tree trunks hung dangerously over the edge. [ J This landscape was hers, her idea of homeland; this is what she dreamed of when she found herself on the other side of the ocean. This landscape made the most outlandish dreams of the Movement understandable. This land sang to her flesh and blood, to her sense of being a woman in love, rebelling against opulence and misery. [] This land deserved a better fate. (Belli 348-49) The narration above depicts the idealized and post-revolutionary Faguas which was Lavinia is fighting for ââ¬â where wealth and misery is not a problem anymore. Belli, dreamt of it in her life. In fact he fought for it, she envision a country with no repressive army, freedom and democratic responsibilities. During the height of the dictatorship, Belli handled few accounts that had to do with businesses with Somoza regime. And because of that she was able to extract documents, which later on she provided to the Sandinista movement. The character of Lavinia in the novel also worked with the ruling regime. Thus, substantiate the parallelism between the two, Belli and Lavinia. As much as Lavinia hated the military leaders she had no choice but to work with them. She had to meet and had conversations with people from the government, whom actually she despised. Belli, on the other hand had also experience that of Laviniaââ¬â¢s sentiments in the novel. Belli, actually had to go to different embassies and talk to people whom she donââ¬â¢t like that much. As far as their revolutionary experience is concerned, both women continued to contribute to the success of the movement. Belli, played an important role in the Sandinistas Movement same as Lavinia when she become involved in the revolutionary movement. She dedicated her life in the struggle to eradicate oppression and injustices. And she even forsakes her life to realize that goal. Lavinia during the height of her consciousness held various educational discussions among several groups to raise their consciousness. Also the discussion between Itza and the main character Lavinia reveals this claim. Belli, on the other also organized group discussions among citizens of Nicaragua to rouse their consciousness as to what is happening in their society. And to encourage them to stand for their rights and liberate themselves from the oppressive ruler of their country.

Its Science vs. Politics in Stem Cell Research :: Persuasive Argumentative Essay Examples
The Patients' Coalition for Urgent Research (CURe), a consortium of three dozen national nonprofit patient organizations, reports that over 100 million Americans suffer from illnesses, some of them terminal, which may be treated by medical advancements in the area of stem cell research (1). The list of ailments includes cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, severe burns, spinal cord injuries, and birth defects. While scientists continue to look for treatments and cures for these diseases through new medicine, innovative surgical techniques, and gene therapy, perhaps the most promising research is being encountered on the frontier of human embryonic stem cell research. From the beginning of this research in animals in the early 1980's, stem cells have been celebrated for their nearly infinite potential in application towards the alleviation, and ultimately the eradication, of many branches of human illne ss and disease. Animal stem cell research and preliminary human stem cell research indicates stem cells as a source of self-renewing, undifferentiated cells that have the ability to differentiate into organs, nerves, blood cells, skin, eyes, hair - basically, any tissue or cell found in an adult mammal. So far, scientists have isolated and indefinitely grown stem cells and, to some degree, demonstrated the cell's ability to differentiate into numerous tissues and cell types. From this groundwork, the scientific community envisions that research using stem cells will lead us to the ability to grow entire organs for transplant to patients suffering from kidney, liver, and heart failure; neurons for patients afflicted with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease; tissue replacement for patients with damaged organs or severe burns; functioning islet cells that will produce insulin for patients diagnosed with diabetes; and the list continues. Because stem cells have the ability to differentiate into every ki nd of cell contained in the human body, their possible therapeutic effects have the potential to help hundreds of millions of people worldwide. However, where there is the most promise, there is also the most controversy, and the bridge between life and death relies largely on the compromise between science and politics. The case against human embryonic stem cell research rests upon the core argument that embryonic stem cells are derived from human embryos and, as such, are protected by ethical principles against human experimentation (2). Whether or not stem cells represent a viable source of human life recapitulates the same debate as the abortion controversy: the argument about when human life begins.

Humanistic and Psychodynamic Essay
Abraham Harold Maslow- Humanistic Approach Humanistic is the psychology study of how the human works as a whole. This studies the uniqueness of the person through their behaviour. Rather than just observing the humans behaviour, humanistic psychologists try to study the humans behaviour first person rather than just observing. Meaning they try to understand the situation and the emotional feelings the person is going through for them to have that specific type of behaviour, they try to understand the behaviour of the person by looking at it from their perspective. Humanistic is a way of thinking and is an ability to solve our own personal problems. This meaning to focus on our own perspectives, experiences, thoughts, self-image and feelings to understand an individual. People can be capable of self-development and their own self-improvement. We have our own choices on what we choose to do and how we chose to take out this option. We chose how we want to behave and whether itââ¬â¢s right or wrong i.e. breaking the law. An i ndividual chosen whether they want to break the law, knowing full well of the consequences. This is called free will; we have the right to choose what we want to do and how we want to behave. The court of law follows this principle because you know whether you have done right or wrong and there is no one to blame, except yourself, because you chose to behave that way. Abraham Harold Maslow was the first psychologist to create the ââ¬Ëhuman hierarchy of needsââ¬â¢ which explains the different level that an individual has to move from throughout life. This hierarchy changes from one level to another and each level has its own specific needs. Most psychologist before Maslow had been concerned with the abnormal and the ill, he convinced and persuaded people to start acknowledging peopleââ¬â¢s basic needs before addressing them as having higher needs or being ill. Firstly on Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy he started with the basic needs of a person such as food, water, sleep etc. then lead to the physical needs of an individual. The highest needs of an individual are ââ¬Ëself-actualizationââ¬â¢ which is realising who you are as an individual and knowing your own moti vations. Not many people get to the self-actualization for many reasons, being that they didnââ¬â¢t get through the different levels of the hierarchy or because they think that they can skip the rest of theà levels, thinking that they know their own self-fulfilment etc. These hierarchies have five different levels of needs. Maslowââ¬â¢s level of human needs started with physiological which is basic survival, understanding the function of the living organism. Which is what an individual needs, their basic needs i.e. water, sleep, breathing and sex. Then safety which is basic need again and feeling secure. For example, freedom from danger, risks or injuries whether at employment, home or doing everyday activities. Love and belonging is the next need which is the emotional level/need. Meaning to understand what love is and what it feels like to belong, dependent on being part of a family or understanding what it is like to love through friendship or sexual relationships. Esteem is the fo urth need, which is respect and recognition. Understanding what your personal goals are in life and what you can achieve throughout life dependent on yourself respect and respect for one another. The final level is self-actualization which is what makes you who you are as an individual, realise your own potentials in life. Also, realising your own self-fulfilment and person growth from peak experiences. Everyone as an own personal desire to move up the hierarchy table towards self-actualization, although their progress is often disruptive by failing to meet the low level needs. As an example if someone doesnââ¬â¢t show love or feel loved then they wonââ¬â¢t be able to succeed through the love and belonging section, if theyââ¬â¢re brought up in an abusive home this would affect the low level safety so they would be decreasing in the levels. Only remarkable people are most likely to reach the highest level, self-actualization. Maslowââ¬â¢s theory was the best type of motivation for an individual, he proposed he hierar chy of needs in his paper ââ¬Å"a theory of Human Motivationâ⬠. Hans J Eysenck and Otto Gross approach to Psychodynamic Hans is a psychologist famous for his work on intelligence and personality. Eysenck claims that Freudian theories can be falsified, also Gross claims that Freudââ¬â¢s theories are scientific but have been proven wrong so which he say is simply ââ¬Å"bad scienceâ⬠. Psychoanalyst tends to only accept YAVIS patients for treatment, YAVIS means young, attractive, verbal, intelligent and successful. This is because YAVIS patients are more likely to recover rather than mentally unstable patients. When the criticism of frauds approach happened was because Gross and Freud were in a disagreement on theà subjects of repression, sublimation and perversion. The meaning of repression is to control and resist what you would want. Sublimation is doing things in an acceptable and respectful manner and perversion is far from normal for example being abnormal. They disagreed on Freudââ¬â¢s theory because they believe that the patients should be capable of feelings and having their freedom also they shouldnââ¬â¢t be forced to do something that they do not want to do. Both psychologists argued that Freud got too involved and attached with his patients because Freud was there 7 days a week. Sigmund Freud, Psychodynamic Approach to Psychology Freud was the founder of psychodynamic approach to psychology; this is because he created a new approach to understanding how the human works and the human individual personality. Freudââ¬â¢ theory was the conscious and unconscious mind, he believed that behaviour and personality derives from the constant and unique interaction of conflicting psychological forces that operate at three different levels of awareness. The three different levels are conscious mind, preconscious mind and unconscious mind. Conscious mind includes everything that we are aware, every single moment. Preconscious mind represents ordinary memory. Unconscious mind reservoirs our feelings, thoughts, urge and memories that are outside out conscious awareness. The theory of the conscious and unconscious mind is done to show our feelings, motives and decisions which are actually influenced by previous/past experiences, which are stored in the pre-conscious and instincts from the unconscious. Freud later made a structural model of the mind which was called ID, EGO and SUPEREGO. The ID, EGO and SUPEREGO link to the conscious, pre-conscious and unconscious mind. ID is the unconscious, EGO is the conscious and SUPEREGO is the pre-conscious and unconscious mind. Although these are not physical areas within the brain theyââ¬â¢re the process of important mental functions. Explanation of each stage is; ID is driven by pleasure principles which strive us for immediate needs and desires, meaning that the person would be wanting things. Although the ID will try to resolve the tension created by pleasure. EGO and SUPEREGO, EGO is something that is developed through ID in the early stages of life, EGO is the component of your personality that deals with reality whereas SUPEREGO is developed a little later as it controls your guilt. For example, if someone wanted aà new pair of shoes ID would kick in because the desire to have them shoes would rise, whereas EGO would have to face reality and realise that you might not have the money to get the shoes then SUPEREGO controls the guilt so then you would start regretting buying the shoes if for instants a family relatives birthday was coming up and now you donââ¬â¢t have the money. EGO works on a reality principle meaning that it wants to please the ID but in a socially and realistic way, which some people deem as unacceptable. The reality principle contemplates the positive and negatives of an action depending on what it decides, it will either act upon the decision or completely abandon it. SUPEREGO is the basic rules and standards for good behaviour. The behaviours included would be those approved by parents and those in authority. The SUPEREGO goal is to improve and civilize our behaviour; it tries to supress all the unacceptable urges that come from the ID. Fraudââ¬â¢ theory claims that the key to a healthy personality is a balance between the ID, EGO and SUPEREGO. Carl Ransom Rogers, Self-Actualization Again, the humanistic approach is how we look at an individual as a whole observing their behaviour and personality. Rogers was a psychotherapist, which is someone who treats people with mental disorders through psychology rather than medical means. After years of work, Rogers compiled the Self-actualization theory which is the realisation of fulfilment of oneââ¬â¢s talents and potentials. Rogers says that people have two basic needs which are positive regard and self-worth. Positive regard is a sense of acceptance from other people and self-worth is feeling adequate. Our feelings of self-worth are important both to psychological health and we can achieve goals and ambitions in life to achieve self-actualization. Rogersââ¬â¢s theory is that the individual is responsible for their own happiness and should not look towards others for it. He believed that a person is born with the desire to be and achieve the best they possibly can. Rogersââ¬â¢s overall theory is about feeling good and mentally healthy therefore meaning a person is cable of resolving their own problems without looking towards others. His therapy was ineffective to those who were unconfident, unhappy and had a lack of self-esteem. So he studied on clients opposite to this, clients who were confident, happy and have a high level of self-esteem. His theory was known as ââ¬ËRogerian Counsellingââ¬â¢ which was only effective on healthy mindedà people which means it did not work on mental and physically damaged clients this only increased emotional problems such as depression, also the theory was more successful on children and young people. The theory key was communication, if the client wasnââ¬â¢t fully communicating with Rogers it would not work, this proved the therapy ineffective to people with phobias. In conclusion Rogers theory of self-actualization teaches people to become self-sufficient upon their own actions rather than seeking it from other people. This proved that people naturally desire to be accepted regardless of what they do, however the majority of people will only accept them dependent on whether or not they want to. Rogers self-actualization tries to help people understand their full potential and what they can achieve, also seek happiness for themselves without looking towards others for it. His theory helps people become more happier about themselves rather than looking for acceptance and happiness from others.

Methods And Preferences Of Learning Styles Education Essay
Learning manner can be defined as the different methods and penchants used by scholars in the procedure of larning. Individual acquisition manner and techniques abound in such a manner that learners discover that they have a peculiar acquisition manner with small or no usage of the other manners. It is besides possible for a scholar to develop ability in less dominant acquisition manners with regard to an activity with small or no usage of his/her predominant larning manner. Hence, we can once and for all state that the best manner to larn depends on the individual ââ¬Ës ability to detect his/her ain larning manner with regard to the activity involved. The VAK theoretical account is the brief signifier of the Visual-Auditory-Kinaesthetic acquisition manners theoretical account. Harmonizing to this theoretical account, most people possess a dominant learning manner ; nevertheless some people may hold an equally balanced blend and mixed of the three acquisition manners. The VAK theoretical account is every bit depicted below: Ocular: Visual perception and Reading Ocular scholars learn best by watching a presentation, looking at artworks, or reading. These scholars will instead prefer largely images and spacial apprehension than listening to an account. An illustration of learning activity that suits this learning manner is presentation. Auditory: Listening and Speaking Auditory scholars would instead prefer listening to things being explained than reading about them. Declaiming information out loud and holding music in the background may be a common survey method, as other noises may go a distraction ensuing in a demand for a comparatively quiet topographic point. An illustration of learning activity that suits this learning manner is talking. Kinesthetic: Touch and Doing. This learning manner is besides referred to as ââ¬ËPhysical ââ¬Ë , or ââ¬ËTactile ââ¬Ë , or ââ¬ËTouchy-Feely ââ¬Ë . These scholars process information best through ââ¬Å" hands-on â⬠experience. They prefer ââ¬Å" action-doing â⬠activities instead than the ââ¬Å" sit still â⬠activities. An illustration of learning activity that suits this learning manner is experiential. It is worthwhile to observe that if there is a mismatch between the pupil ââ¬Ës learning manner and the instructor ââ¬Ës instruction manner the pupil will decidedly non understand what he/she is being taught ; which can finally take to hapless classs and low ego regard on the portion of the pupil. Based on the aforesaid grounds, the instructor is expected to integrate a assortment of different learning acquisition manners into his/her lesson program in order to do the lesson all inclusive and enable them to larn more efficaciously. Differentiation is defined as the act by which teachers/trainers utilizing a scope of different attacks and resources to suit the different persons in the schoolrooms. The best manner to run into student ââ¬Ës different acquisition demands is to present the course of study in a figure of different ways ; to distinguish the vehicle by which the accomplishments, cognition and constructs arrive, every bit good as showing a scope of undertakings. The ground for making this is because it ensures the maximal sum of pupil engagement, i.e. student planning, pupil appraisal and pupil determination devising. Examples of activities that are appropriate to the three identified acquisition manners are as follows: Ocular: Using highlighter pens to footnote work. Auditory: Introducing new words through linguistic communication games. Kinesthetic: By supplying chances for scholars to make things. Functional accomplishments are practical accomplishments in English, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology ( ICT ) . These practical accomplishments which include employability, personal and developmental accomplishments are expected to be completed by Learners set abouting the 14-19 Diplomas as portion of their chief acquisition because they would shortly be used as replacing for the current accomplishments demand in apprenticeships. The makings with regard to these accomplishments have been developed up to level 2. The importance of these practical accomplishments can non be overemphasized as they are designed to let persons to work independently, efficaciously and confidently. Implanting functional accomplishments involves adding the three functional accomplishments to a specific country to be taught so that scholars can larn the particular topic in inquiry and besides at the same time develop their reading, spelling, composing, arithmetic, basic math, ICT etc. Implanting functional accomplishments need merely be at the degree of the scholars and the topic. Below are a few ways of by and large implanting functional accomplishments: Not accepting written work with hapless spelling or grammar. Offer support if necessary. Give scholars worksheets to rehearse any slippery maths Promote them to utilize your class as a ground to upgrade their IT skills It is expected that any lesson program by the teacher/trainer should hold these three different elements of functional accomplishments embedded in them. I will utilize a faculty in my specialist country ( ICT ) called Customer support proviso for IT Professionals as an illustration. The help desk client support faculty is a Flat 3 City & A ; Guilds class that teaches learners how to manage client complain and support questions in a professional mode. It is an ICT class and the scenario involves scholars working for a Support company. It consists of three chief undertakings and two bomber undertakings. Undertaking A: Learners are to react to 10 different electronic mails from clients either kicking about the support services or bespeaking for aid from the help desk. They besides have to utilize database package to log all the calls they deal with on the help desk. Embedded functional Skills in Task A: Literacy and ICT. The scholars have to write/compose a professional electronic mail response to ailments or petition which MUST be grammatically right. They besides use Microsoft entree to log the calls in a database. Undertaking B: Learners will work with a dataset on Microsoft Excel. They are to analyze the informations and so compose a study on their analysis. Their study MUST incorporate mathematical diagrams such as Pie charts, saloon charts and graphs. Embedded functional accomplishments in Task B: MATHS ( NUMERACY ) making pie charts, saloon charts, graphs AND LITERACY composing a study. Task C: Learners MUST make a press release that illustrates how to decide common support jobs. The instructions in the press release MUST be grammatically right and easy to understand and so distributed to clients. Learners besides do a short talk presentation for clients. The presentation must be based on a common support mistake. Embedded functional accomplishments in Task C: LITERACY i.e. developing a press release and carry oning a one on one presentation session. There are many other faculties similar to the one discussed above in my specialist country. These faculties are embedded with all the functional accomplishments and are designed non merely to measure the scholar ââ¬Ës degree of functional accomplishments but besides to assist them develop the needful accomplishments in employment and life. Compare How War Is Portrayed in the Poems Dulce Essays
Compare How War Is Portrayed in the Poems Dulce Essays Compare How War Is Portrayed in the Poems Dulce Essay Compare How War Is Portrayed in the Poems Dulce Essay It Is Important to note that both toes had experience of war and that as such we cannot comment on differences relating from distance to the sub]etc_ Owens poem Is a story of a gas attack In the First World War. Using pathetic fallacy (ewe cursed through sludge) and negative language he sets up a scene of sheer horror. He begins by describing their weary march. He describes them using language like bent double, asleep and knock- kneed. This immediately gives the impression of fatigue, and he goes on to use negative language such as blood-shod, lame and blind to convey the dire straits which they are in. The poem is in Iambic Pentameter which is very rhythmic and emphasizes the last syllable of each line which is often used in rhyme, as in this poem (even though enjambment takes away the full emphasis). He uses enjambment and plosive language to emphasis particular ideas such as beggar and flares. These both change the rhythm in either speed or rhythm. The rhythm is indeed slow at first and this causes the reader to mull over what Owen is saying. However in the second stanza the rhythm picks up to articulate the sudden rush of a gas attack. Owen uses a mix of quickening language and words with short syllables to peed the stanza up such as Quick! Quick! and Ecstasy. This contrasts with Brocks poem which maintains a steady rhythm throughout the poem, this tone makes it feel very Instructional and dry. Brock, in his poem, talks about various deferent forms of warfare and killing in a very cold and instructional sort of way. Brock alludes to Christ, and to the decreasingly barbaric ways of killing men that have developed. Brock also refers to gas over one verse during his poem, however he does not concentrate on it as Owen does. This also speaks of the deference of background teen the two authors; Brock was a navy sailor during the Second World War, while Owen was a rifleman during the First World War. Brock, In part to emphasis the brutal efficiency of his poem, does not use pathetic fallacy. Brock also uses enjambment, especially between lines (never between verses this causes an uninterrupted rhythm throughout the poem. Both poems portray war very differently: however they both seem to think that the terms death and war are synonymous. This may be classed as simply the shared view of two veterans of war: however this could also be seen as a means to the ends of thwarting war. Having said this Owen does not say that they are as closely linked as Brock does. Owen sets up teen poem as set In war Ana teen uses tenant as alter teen conclusion to teen story, or as, at least, a means to the end. Owen makes it very clear that war is responsible for this death: in the rush, one man clumsily drops his mask, and the narrator sees the man floundering like a man in fire or lime. Owen then talks about how he has to throw the man into the back of a wagon and the mans hanging face, like a devils sick of sin. Owen contrasts the idea of drowning as a peaceful death with his reality f it: He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. There is also some very strong imagery here: As under a green sea, and He plunges at me. Note that plunge is a plosive word and is therefore emphasized. This is also true as with flung in the next verse. It is however the last verse that speaks the most about death. It uses much negative imagery to bring its point about such as: devils sick of sin, and froth- corrupted lungs. This makes the poem very powerful in the point that it is trying to bring about. He also makes the reader Join the battle, as it were, by stating: If in mothering dreams you coul d pace, this allows the reader to really connect with this. In Brooks poem the poet speaks of death and war as the same thing. The title is quite significant in this theme: Five Wap to Kill a Man, and he goes on to describe various forms of warfare. Brock speaks of death in an increasingly clinical way; this signifies the loss of humanity in war. It begins by speaking of crucifixion where you need people. It ends by speaking of Aircraft where you dont even have to see, or know the people that you bomb and then about living a life in the twentieth century which he remarks is like a living death: leave him there. The steady rhythm of the poem also highlights the clean brutality of it all there is no speeding-up, no highlighting of death at any point. Brock uses a lot of neutral imagery in his poem. He even speaks of crucifixion and the man who has to nail the victim to the post as neutral: and a man to hammer the nails home. In this poem Brock speaks to the reader as if giving instruction, he does not speak personally at all about anything. T here if the victim who Just serves as the he in the poem and anyone else is Just referred to as a third person noun. This makes the poem very impersonal and makes sure that there is no connection between reader and victim which allows the poem to be read without emotion of any kind which could distort the meaning of the poem it is intended to show the loss of humanity (the loss of emotion) rather than describe vivid and terrifying images of war. This is not to say that he does not use strong imagery, he Just doesnt describe it in a terrifying way: a length of steel rather than a bloodied sword. This is opposed to Owens poem which is very personal, referring to the reader at various points such as If you could hear My friend, you would not It is also written in first person and directed at Journalists and other poets of the time who were writing about Joining the army, such as Jessie Pope who encouraged young men to Join the army, including Owen himself. Both poems aim to make the reader against the notion of war. In my personal opinion Brooks poem contributes to this cause better as it is written from a viewpoint which is far from war, which is what I am and thus I connect more with it. However other than with my own personal opinion I cannot compare these poems anymore as they are so different in delivery. Both achieve their purpose.
